Title Preparatory Survey and Detailed Design for Improvement of the Capacity of Public Food Storage (Supervision and Technical Assistance are scheduled)
Period October 2010–October 2014
Funded by Japanese Grant Aid and JICA

Food security is a matter of national importance for the government of Bangladesh, to secure sufficient supplies for the entire population, particularly the poor, in the event of a natural disaster. However, the current capacity of storage facilities is insufficient, which is compounded by losses due to poor temperature, moisture and insect control. Disasters such as cyclones continue to cause massive food shortages and price increases; underlining the dire need to strengthen storage capacity.

Considering the above, we, Kokusai Kogyo undertook a preparatory survey on behalf of the Japanese government, and proposed a plan to establish a multistoried warehouse equipped with air conditioning facilities and other necessary equipment, as well a plan for technical training.

The plan is to be implemented using Japan’s Grant Aid. In addition to completing detailed designs for all of the works, we will supervise the construction and equipment procurement, and give the counterparts technical training in all aspects of operation and maintenance.

The project will:

a) Construct a food storage facility
multistoried warehouse equipped with air conditioning machines to store rice in the long term,
truck yard for unloading and lodging of rice, and
slope for trucks to access the upper floor.
b) Procure equipment necessary for
storage and distribution of packed rice, including forklifts and pallets, and
monitoring such as moisture meters, thermometers for grain, and thermo hygrometers.
c) Provide technical assistance to
manage the warehouse adequately including of inventory for the pallet storage system,
load rice sacks on pallets and stack pallets using forklifts, and
operate air conditioning machines properly and effectively to maintain grain moisture.
