Kokusai Kogyo lead project, the GIDES in Brazil won the UN Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk Reduction

Kokusai Kogyo, a subsidiary of Japan Asia
Group, is leading an ongoing project in Brazil — the JICA Project for
Strengthening National Strategy of Integrated Natural Disaster Risk Management (GIDES)
— which was awarded the United Nations Sasakawa Award for Disaster Risk
Reduction at the 2017 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction held in
Cancun, Mexico from May 24th to May 26th.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk
Reduction (UNISDR), with the cooperation of Japan’s Nippon Foundation, is
recognizing organizers/implementers of projects that achieve remarkable results
in reducing and raising awareness of disaster risks by awarding the UN Sasakawa
Award for Disaster Risk Reduction. This award is the most prestigious prize in
the field of disaster prevention and reduction and was established more than 30
years ago with the aim of promoting the activities of organizations and
individuals who are implementing measures to mitigate natural disaster risks.

The internationally award winning project
in Brazil, GIDES, has been implemented by JICA since 2013. This project is being
executed collaboratively by a long-term expert team — Japanese officers from
the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism and prefectural
governments — and a short-term expert team of consultants. Kokusai Kogyo has
been leading the short-term expert team since 2015.
